Good Point Recycling - Computer and TV Refurbishment
Most Americans (85%) would prefer to pay
an affordable $5-10 to see their old equipment "go to a new home"
than to throw it away for free.
Good Point
Recycling of Vermont
uses refurbishment and resale to make recycling more affordable.
It costs Good
Point Recycling about $6 to crush and recycle a bad computer
monitor. But when a few working or repairable monitor can be
sold for $18, that 20% diversion can lower the cost of recycling 10
monitors by 80%
-$60 The cost of
destroying/recycling 10 monitors
+ 12 The avoided
recycling cost from diverting 2 monitors
+ 36 Income from the resale of 2 $18 monitors
-$12 a savings
of 80% from a diversion of 20%
This “80-20” Rule has been applied with success by
Good Point Recycling and ElectroniCycle Inc. Vermont and
Massachusetts refurbishment and resale programs make recycling the
bad monitors more affordable. This type of program can be
jeopardized by flow-control programs. If we are mandated to
send equipment back to the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), we
may not be able to resell their good old equipment. |
